On August 26, 2019, a drunk driver hit a car carrying Josh’s mother, brother, stepfather, and his brother’s girlfriend. His brother suffered a major head injury and spent weeks in an induced coma.

Afterward, Josh decided he needed a fresh start. He went to another state to stay with family. He found work building houses, and for the first time in a long time, I could hear something different in his voice. Hope.
Then Christmas came. The construction job ended. The family he was staying with was facing eviction, and everything around him deteriorated.

The next 32 days were some of the hardest days our family would ever live through. Josh was desperate, homeless, and using again. He began calling repeatedly, sometimes several times a day. He said goodbye. He apologized. He told us he was sorry for everything. But he wouldn’t tell us exactly where he was.

We begged him to go to a hospital. We asked him to call 911.
When he told us he was hungry, my daughter and I ordered him a pizza and his favorite Pepsi. We couldn’t control what he would do with his life. But we could make sure that, for that moment, he had a meal.
